Death Of Worker In Far North Under Investigation

The death of a construction worker in the far north is under investigation.

A statement from Wataynikanyap Power says the individual was found dead on the evening of January 26 at the work site located 390 kilometres north of Pickle Lake.

The company says the family has been notified.

CEO Margaret Kenequanash says, “On behalf of the People, our partners, and the leadership, I offer our deepest condolences to the family. You are in our thoughts and prayers. Our hearts are with you, including all the loved ones and co-workers.”

Kenora MP Eric Melillo also sent his condolences.

The project contractor, Valard Construction, says authorities have been notified and investigations have begun.

No other details have been released.

The Watay transmission company is made up of 24 First Nations, Fortis Ontario Inc. and other private investors.

The project involves the development of 1,800 kilometres of transmission lines in northwestern Ontario to connect a number of Indigenous communities to the electrical grid.
