40-Year-Old Kenora Bomber Remains A Mystery

It was 40-years-ago today that a bank robber attempted to pull off a heist at the CIBC in downtown Kenora.
The event became one of the biggest unsolved mysteries in northwestern Ontario and perhaps all of Canada.
The man had a bomb in his mouth and when he left the bank he was shot by a police sniper and blew up.
Despite a full set of fingerprints that were circulated around the world in 1973 and DNA tests in 2003, the identity of the robber remains a mystery to this day.
The robber was the only one killed in the blast, but a police officer was injured.
The man is buried in an unmarked grave in the Kenora Cemetery.
Former police Chief Dan Jorgenson doubts his name will ever be known.
Jorgensen says they did investigate a person they considered the mostly likely suspect, but he turned out to be alive and well living in southern France.
Our sister station CJRL broadcast the event live across the street.
