The NDP has found that nearly 50 First Nations communities aren’t included in the Nutrition North program.
A group of northern MP’s is calling on the Conservatives to act immediately to include isolated communities in the program.
They have introduced a proposal that includes a comprehensive review of the initiative with Northerners as full partners, a strategy to develop a sustainable solution to food insecurity and the creation of an equitable program for northern communities.
The NDP says the current criteria for Nutrition North isn’t fair and accessible and stress isolated northern communities aren’t benefiting from the subsidy, where access to affordable, nutritious food is an issue.
The party adds they need funding that reflects real circumstances that northerners are facing so they don’t go hungry.
A recent Auditor General report found the program had minimal impact on lowering food costs and lacked transparency or accountability.
