Supporting youth and keeping them happy and positive.
That was the main goal of Children’s Mental Health Awareness Month celebrated the last four weeks at New Prospect School in Dryden.
Vice-Principal Teri Jackson says teachers got their message through by hosting a number of activities.
Jackson says they wanted students to think about positive self-talk in their heads and quickly correcting if negative thoughts come forward.
She says they key is staying positive and happy and talking about problems.
Jackson notes they also put a heavy emphasis on helping others.
She says the school deals with the whole child on a daily basis and that’s why they wanted to focus on the importance of keeping a healthy mind.
Some of the activities this month included daily messages over the announcements highlighting positive mental health strategies and coping techniques as well as a “Wear Green Day” in support of Children’s Mental Health.
They handed out and posted Positive Affirmation Tickets, created green ribbons and hosted a school wide yoga/mediation day.
Students also created a massive Random Acts of Kindness community tree.
