A Day To Listen, Reflect & Learn

Today, Canadian Radio, in partnership with the Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Fund, come together for A Day To Listen to the voices and stories of Indigenous people in Canada.

You don’t have to go far to see the remnants of residential school history in our area, and while McIntosh is a beautiful place, it’s also a sombre one. To think that this happened in our very own backyard, less than 100 kilometres from Dryden.

The site is located quite a ways down Highway 647, and I highly recommend that you take the time to see it for yourself. It’s one thing to hear about these events, it’s another to see the remnants in person.

It happened across the country, and was unfortunately swept under the rug by Canadian authorities. The last residential school closed in 1996…. this is not ancient history.

For those interested in learning more, there’s a great program called First Contact done by APTN and you can watch all three episodes of both seasons here: https://www.tvo.org/programs/first-contact

It follows six Canadians from all walks of life, and challenges their views by travelling across the country to several Indigenous communities, becoming fully immersed in their culture, language, and ways of life.
You can also #DoSomething by texting to donate – Just text DWF to 20222 to donate $10 to the Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Fund.
