Abitibi-cuts paper machine

Abitibi-Consolidated will be permanently shutting down one paper machine at its newsprint in Kenora and could idle a second machine indefinitely.

The company announced this morning that one paper machine would be taken out of commission by the end of October.

Denis Leclerc is a spokesperson for Abitibi and says its still too early to say how many jobs will be affected.

Leclerc says Abitibi officials will be meeting with representitives from the provincial government tomorrow to talk about ways of reducing operating costs, including the development of a co-generation plant for the Kenora mill.
