A Fort Frances lawyer says he’s been contacted by dozens of people who believe they’ve been harmed by social media sites writing about crime and court proceedings in northwestern Ontario.
Doug Judson has put out a free offer of help after one such story included a photo of the wrong person charged.
Judson admits not all of who have contacted him have a clear case of defamation or libel.
However, he says they all have legitimate concerns regarding journalist standards and how legal proceedings have been depicted on social media.
Judson says issues include “people being smeared by some of the reportings on the way facts are depicted in the way there are generalizations made about people who may share a same last name.”
Judson would not say if he’s now representing any of those who’ve contacted him.
