Army Worms Back In Northwestern Ontario

First it was ticks, now it’s the forest tent caterpillars turn to invade northwestern Ontario.

Dr. Taylor Scarr is Ontario’s Chief Entomologist and says while the so-called “Army Worms” have few natural enemies, there is one pest that can help decimate the population.

Scarr says it’s called the “friendly fly”, noting if you see large numbers of them, then there’s a good chance there will be an end to the invasion.

He notes those fly’s can kill about 80% of the army worm population.

For the second year in a row, northwestern Ontario is being particularly hit hard by the forest tent caterpillar.
