Arrest Made In Pikangikum Infant Drowning

Ontario Provincial Police have arrested a Pikangikum woman in connection with an infant drowning last year.

OPP in Pikangikum say the incident involving a two-year-old child happened August 23 2020.

The victim was airlifted to Winnipeg Children’s Hospital for further medical attention, but due to the serious nature of the injuries the child passed away.

OPP and the North West Region Crime Unit, under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch, along with OPP Forensic Identification Services, the North West Region Provincial Liaison Team and the Office of the Chief Coroner started an investigation surrounding the death.

25 year old Helen Fiddler is charged with:

  • Causing Death by Criminal Negligence
  • Abandoning Child
  • Fail To Provide the Necessaries of Life

The accused was released on an undertaking with a scheduled court date of February 24that the Ontario Court of Justice in Pikangikum.
