ATIKOKAN SCHOOL BUS PLEA

Another desperate plea was heard to try and reverse the Rainy River District School Boards decision to sell the Atikokan school bus.

School teacher, Shane Fierty, spoke at last nights board meeting on behalf of the 600 Atikokan residents who signed a petition – requesting the board replace the almost 12 year old school bus.

The board voted last month to sell the bus – which is used for school trips, innovative programs, and travel to and from sporting events.

Although the R.R.D.S.B. will not replace the bus, they did agree on contracting one out at the school’s request – claiming it would cost approximately the same amount.

Members of the Atikokan Community are concerned the cost will in fact be more than estimated, and parents will have to make up for the added charge.

Fierty says a community that is already struggling financially, cannot afford to make up any difference and therefore the students will suffer.

The board has agreed to look over the request and reply by letter, sometime later this month.
