Ontario’s auditor general says generous compensation and benefit packages given to workers at Ontario Power Generation are having a huge impact on the cost of electricity.
In her annual report, Bonnie Lysyk says about two-thirds of OPG’s operating costs are human resources related.
Lysyk says the size OPG’s senior management group has increased 58% since 2005.
She notes that about 8,000 employees, or 62% of staff, were identified on the 2012 Sunshine List of public-sector employees earning more than $100,000.
Lysyk says compensation packages at OPG are “significantly more generous” than for comparable positions in the civil service,
Ontario Power Generation has taken action following the release of the report.
OPG has fired two vice presidents and its chief financial officer.
Board Chair Jake Epp says they strongly believe the auditor findings will serve as a catalyst for achieving further positive change at OPG.
