Bacterial Illness Spreading In Northwestern Ontario

The Northwestern Health Unit says it has seen an increase in the number of cases of Invasive Group A streptococcus infections and those numbers are expected to rise this Winter.

Medical Officer of Health Dr. Kit Young-Hoon says it’s a bacteria that is commonly found in the throat or on the skin.

She says for most people the bacteria isn’t severe, with symptoms of strep throat or mild skin infection.

However, Young-Hoon warns the bacteria could end up invading the body and become life-threatening and she strongly recommends that you visit a health care provider right away.

Young-Hoon says if the bacteria does settle into your deep tissue, you may experience chills, a sore throat and a fever, pain in your extremities and become dizzy or confused.

Those at risk include individuals with pre-existing skin condition,
chronic diseases and those who inject drugs or drink excessively.

Dr. Kit Young-Hoon provides some preventative measures.

She suggests keeping wounds clean, with constant monitoring, as well as washing your hands at all times.

Young-Hoon adds make sure your immunizations are up to date and close your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze.
