Big Trout Support

Author Margaret Atwood and other prominent Canadians have co-signed a letter calling for the release of seven jailed aboriginal leaders.

Actor Cathy Jones and musician Sarah Harmer are among the 20 musicians, authors and others sending a letter to Premier Dalton McGuinty.

In it, they plead the case of the jailed aboriginals trying to stop mining activity near the Big Trout Lake First Nation, including a grandmother who will spend her 60th birthday behind bars.

Cecilia Begg is currently serving her six month sentence in the Kenora Jail.

The group, including former UN ambassador Stephen Lewis, says mining shouldn’t take precedence over peoples’ homes and health.
