Birth Control Pills Impacting Aquatic Life

A new study shows that estrogen found in birth control pills can affect aquatic life.
The study was started back in 1999 at the Experimental Lakes Area west of Vermilion Bay.
Karen Kidd is a researcher at the University of New Brunswick and says estrogen had some surprising effects on some species of fish.
Kidd says the fathead minnow population was eventually killed off in the lake they had added estrogen in.
He notes that collapse also had a detrimental effect on lake trout populations.
Kidd adds insects the minnows fed off also saw their populations increase as a result.
She notes the good news is if the estrogen does make it into local lakes or rivers, it can treated and eliminated.
