Black Bear Hunting Not The Answer: Horwath

On the heels of a big announcement on a proposed expansion of the spring bear hunt, the provincial NDP want everyone at the table.

Ontario says the pilot will support economic growth in northern communities battered by higher costs of living.

Leader Andrea Horwath says that’s why her party is calling for a full discussion with stakeholders from all across the north to come up with a permanent solution.

She says there has to be a better way to deal with what is a cyclical problem of nuisance bears here in the north, adding human-bear conflicts should be sat at the feet of the Ontario government, as the Ministry of Natural Resources has done nothing but download the problem to municipal police over the last few years.

Horwath says the proof will be in the pudding, noting, if this is the government’s way to undo its wrongs, only time will tell. (File photo)
