Kenora MP Bob Nault says federal relief for the softwood lumber industry is a step in the right direction.
Nault stresses this is just the beginning, noting $867-million may not be enough when all is said and done.
Nault says the government is committed to the forest industry and keeping jobs in this region and stresses he doesn’t want to see a setback.
He adds the money will also help businesses who rely on the softwood sector as well as smaller sawmills.
Meantime, Nault stresses they are ready to put up a fight against the tariffs.
Nault admits the dispute with the United States will be a long and drawn out process, but states they are in it for the long haul.
He warns it could take years before there is any kind of resolution, which means there could be some hardship for local lumber companies for a couple of more years.
