Prospects look grim for the Bombardier plant in Thunder Bay.
Union spokesperson Dominic Pasqualino says if they don’t get any new contracts soon there won’t be any work.
He warns the facility may have to shut down by the end of the year.
“We’re dying here we need work. I have a lot of my members laid off now. A lot of them have quit, a lot of them have taken other jobs”, explains Pasqualino.
The Unifor official adds workers are hoping the federal and provincial governments kick in money towards major contracts for Toronto streetcars and subway cars.
However, he says only the City of Toronto has made the financial commitment.
Unifor President Jerry Dias raised the red flag this week in an opinion piece in the Toronto Star entitled, “Without leadership Bombardier rail car plant in Thunder Bay risks closure.”
