Bravery And Lifesaving Awards Being Handed Out Today

A handful of police officers from throughout northwestern Ontario and southern Manitoba will be honoured Wednesday in Thunder Bay.

OPP Commissioner Vince Hawks will be presenting regional awards.

Winnipeg Police Officer Joel Vertone will be presented the Commissioner’s Citation for Lifesaving and a St. John Ambulance Award after he helped save a man from drowning last August at Rushing River Provincial Park.

Three civilians and three OPP officers will receive a citation for bravery for saving a man following a washout on Highway 618 in Red lake.

Two more OPP officers from Thunder Bay will be presented a Federal Certificate of Commendation for rescuing two boaters on Shebandawon Lake during a severe storm.
