The Federal government has launched a new $8-million ‘Indigenous Mentorship Network Program’ that will focus on health research for aboriginal students.
Health Minister Jane Philpott made the announcement in Thunder Bay Wednesday and she hopes by encouraging more research will help address issues facing First Nations communities.
Philpott says she wants to ensure young people have everything available to connect senior and experienced researchers.
The Northern Ontario School of Medicine has been named as a partner in the initiative.
Dean Dr. Roger Strasser says Indigenous students who see the need for complex and sometimes overwhelming health services in First Nation communities need support and mentorship.
