Canada Providing Additional Support For Refugees

More financial aid from Canada to assist with the refugee crisis overseas.

International Development Minister Marie-Claude Bibeau says Canada will contribute an extra 100-million to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

The money will be used in urgent humanitarian needs in Syria and neigbouring countries.

Bibeau says that includes shelter, protection, education and health.

She adds Canada will also match other local donations.

It brings Canada’s contribution so far to almost $1-billion.

Meantime, Canada has so far issued 928 permanent resident visas to Syrian refugees, but there is still no timeline for when they could start arriving.

Immigration Minister John McCallum blames red tape overseas for the delays.
