Cancer Society Introduces New Fee

Some cancer patients in northwestern Ontario will see a new charge if they need a ride to the Cancer Centre in Thunder Bay.
The Canadian Cancer Society say any patient signing up to access its transportation service after October 1st will be billed a one-time, $100 registration fee.
Regional Director Barbara Spencer cites rising costs and increased demand for the new fee.
Spencer says the number of cancer cases continues to rise and the number of northern residents needing treatment is on the rise.
The fee doesn’t apply to patients using public transportation or those who qualify for coverage under the Northern Health Travel Grant.
Spencer says they will also take into account a person’s ability to pay.
The Society provides about 2,000 rides each year for patients accessing the Centre.
