A shortage of aboriginal stem cell donors has prompted Canadian Blood Services to try to boost donation rates in Northwestern Ontario.
The dontation will give patients with leukemia and other life-threatening illnesses a shot at recovery.
Spokesperson Michael Hyduk says 70% of patients who need a stem cell or bone marrow transplant can’t find a match in their family.
Hyduk says 83% of stem cell and bone marrow donors are Caucasian and only 0.09% are aboriginal.
