The number of so-called “traditional families” in the region has declined over the last five years.
The latest census show that married couples with children account for an average of 37-percent of the families in the district, down from 42-percent.
However, the number of common-law relationships with children is on the rise.
Census results show those couples make up 8.5-percent, up from 7-percent in 1996.
Stats Canada defines a census family as married couples with or without children as well as common law couples with or without children.
The results comes from information gathered in Dryden, Sioux Lookout, Red Lake, Ear Falls, Ignace and Machin.
Atikokan stats were not released.
