City Of Dryden Closing Barclay Landfill Site

The City of Dryden is moving ahead with the closure of the Barclay Landfill site.

Manager of Public Works and Engineering Blake Poole says they’ve tried their best to maintain the life of the landfill since finding a number of deficiencies in a 2006 report.

Consultants and the Ministry of Environment have strongly recommended closure as the landfill has reached its end of life for volume capacity.

Poole says they are looking to close the site at the end of summer but stresses the public will have plenty of notice.

It costs $64,000 to operate the Barclay site and the City has been losing $16,000 a year.

Poole notes there will still be environmental and inspection costs once the landfill is closed.

Yearly costs would amount to just over $11,000.

Staff are now looking at options for the Highway 502 landfill site.

Options on the table include maintaining the status quo, adjusting hours or expanding hours.

Some on Council believe the City shouldn’t adjust hours and take advantage of the savings.

Reports indicate savings could reach $20,000-$30,000.
