Federal Budget Highlights

The Conservative Government is bringing in a balanced budget.

Finance Minister Joe Oliver says they’re projecting positive figures including a $1.4-billion surplus.

Some of the budget highlights include more money for seniors, infrastructure and a new public transit fund.

The new Public Transit Fund will start in 2017 with over $750-million set aside for the first two years.

$5.8-billion is planned for infrastructure upgrades over the next six years.

The Conservative Government is also planning to raise seniors benefits by 24% and increase the compassion care leave for employees with dying relatives from six weeks to six months.

The fiscal document includes the elimination of remaining tariffs on machinery, equipment, and manufacturing inputs.

Oliver says the manufacturing sector is vital to the economy.

The Conservatives are also proposing reducing the taxes for small businesses from 11% to 9% in 2019.

Other highlights include funding for cyber security, as well as more money to counter ISIS and to battle terrorism.
