Position Summary
The Promotor – Harm Reduction is responsible for developing, facilitating, and delivering health promotion education and programs aimed at reducing the negative health, social, and legal impacts associated with substance use and sexually transmitted and blood-borne infections (STBBIs). This role works in partnership with community workers and partner organizations to provide culturally safe education, resources, and support to promote safer practices, improve overall wellbeing, and enhance access to prevention, testing, and health care services.
Accountability
The Promoter – Harm Reduction is directly accountable to the Manager – Harm Reduction.
Qualifications
• Persons of First Nations ancestry will be given preference (OHRC, Part II, Special Employment)
• College diploma in a health-related field or a combination of education/experience as deemed acceptable by SLFNHA
• A minimum of two years’ experience in a health setting.
• Experience working in a First Nations health setting is an asset.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Excellent presentation skills.
• Strong organizational and facilitation skills.
• Experience with Microsoft Office, graphic design software, and other computer software.
• Knowledge of the culture, history, geographical location, and health priorities of the First
Nations communities in the Sioux Lookout region.
• Valid Ontario G driver’s licence or willing to obtain.
• Ability to communicate in one of the First Nations dialects of the Sioux Lookout region is an asset.
• Ability to perform the requirements of the role on a regular basis
Roles & Responsibilities
1. Works with communities to identify and monitor community priorities around harm reduction.
2. Works with communities to identify supporting factors for facilitating behavioural changes and identify solutions, develop enhanced approaches, and create supportive environments to prevent sexually transmitted infections, blood-borne infections and associated substance-use related harms through community visits, radio shows, local newsletters, school programs, community workshops, webinars, video conferences, social media, etc.
3. Uses health promotion expertise and experience to advocate for communities and the Sioux Lookout area to prevent sexually transmitted and blood-borne infections and associated substance-use related harms
4. Develops, implements, monitors, and supports the evaluation of a regional strategy for Harm Reduction’s health promotion.
5. Ensures that the Harm Reduction program incorporates community feedback into future regional and community-based programs and initiatives.
6. Supports and enables communities to develop and implement their own health promotion strategy/approaches to Harm Reduction.
7. Works with policy analysts and communities to develop and support healthy policies to prevent acquiring and transmitting infectious diseases.
8. Works with other ACW staff to develop culturally appropriate education material and health promotion campaigns.
9. Identifies and develops potential partnerships for regional and community-based Harm
Reduction programming.
10. Maintains a good working relationship with community-based and partner organizations, representing SLFNHA and Approaches to Community Wellbeing on related working groups or committees, as needed.
11. Provides expert advice, technical consultation, and continuing education to SLFNHA staff, partners, and communities relating to preventing sexually transmitted and blood-borne infections.
12. Other duties as assigned.
