CMA Out With Warning Of Pot Use Among Youth

Marijuana should not be used by young people.

That warning in an editorial published by The Canadian Medical Association Journal.

It argues marijuana is toxic to the developing brains of young people who use it on a regular basis.

The editorial points out the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health has stated “cannabis is not a benign substance and its health harms increase with intensity of use, even though it’s believed the brain develops until the age of 25”.

It also lists the risks as an increased presence of mental illness, including depression, anxiety and psychosis.

In pending federal legislation, the CMA is recommending the minimum age of consumption be set at 21 years, not 18.
