A survey of more than 250 lakes across Canada has found a potent liver toxin in every province, including northwestern Ontario.
The toxin, called microcystin, is found in lakes heavily loaded with nutrients from agricultural runoff and development.
Study author Diane Orihel says more research is needed to nail down the conditions that produce the toxin.
However, Orihel stresses that it’s time to get serious about water quality as it’s now a human health concern.
She notes humans are having major impact on water quality.
Orihel says the ideal place for such research would be the Experimental Lakes Area near Dryden which has been targeted by recent federal government budget cuts.
