Trustees with the Keewatin-Patricia District School Board pulled no punches Tuesday night in saying that something needs to be done to stop a steady downward trend of poor High School Literacy Test results.
Staff reported that 31% of students who wrote the test for the first time last year failed, while roughly 61% of those writing for a second time were not successful.
A total of 823-students wrote the Provincially mandated exam and the numbers were well below the Provincial average.
The report also indicated that 36% of first time and second time writers didn’t even bother to show up and write the test.
Senior staff indicated that it’s “all hands on deck” to meet the needs of students and change those numbers around.
While the numbers are sobering, a few bright spots came out of the report, including graduation rates.
The 4-year rate of 78% and 5-year rate of 89% are right on line with other Provincial Boards.
