The federal government has tabled its draft First Nations Education Act.
The legislation would see Ottawa set and enforce standards for schools on aboriginal reserves and bring those schools up to provincial standards.
Conservative officials say the Act provides quality education, while respecting First Nations culture, language, rights and treaties.
The 32-page draft bill calls for an outside inspector to review school standards and performance every year on First Nations reserves, and to make suggestions for improvement when necessary.
If an inspector finds “major and persistent problems” aren’t being dealt with by First Nations, Ottawa can then appoint a temporary official to manage schools.
