Still a couple of days to provide feedback on a proposal to create to new
ridings in northern Ontario.
The Northern Ontario Electoral Boundaries Commission is just wrapping up
it’s final public consultations.
Joyce Pelletier feels they’ve done a good job balancing the needs of the constituents
in this region.
The new Kenora-Rainy River Riding will be bounded on the north by CN mainline, but won’t
include Grassy Narrows or Wabaseemung, Lac Seul or Sioux Lookout.
It’s population is listed as 53 thousand.
One of the new ridings would be called Kiiwetinong and include the communities of Red Lake and Ear Falls as well as a number of first nations north of Kenora with a population of 32,784, 60 percent of which would be aboriginal.
The other new riding would be Mushkegowuk, which would be made up of first nations in the northeastern part of the provice up to James Bay and inlcude Kapuskasing and Hearst.
It would be the smallest of the new ridings at 29,687, with 15 percent of the population aboriginal and 61 percent French.
The City of Timmins would form it’s own riding at 41,788 thousand.
The final day for public feedback is July 13th.
