The province’s corrections ministry says it’s taking the road less travelled when it comes to tackling the crisis in corrections.
In a visit to Thunder Bay last week, Minister Yasir Naqvi honed in on a focus to overhaul Ontario’s criminal justice system.
He says a new deal recently reached with corrections workers clears the way to get moving on a transformation strategy.
Naqvi adds he’ll let an arbitrator decide whether or not correctional officers should be paid like other essential services. In the new contract for the province’s jail staff, the government agreed to send the issue of wages to an arbitrator.
Naqvi says he’s not concerned the province won’t be able to afford whatever arbitrated decision they’ll be bound to. He notes the most important thing from his perspective is that the province work towards reforming the status quo. (File photo)
