Two investigations are taking place into the serious incident Monday night at the Thunder Bay District Jail that saw a corrections officer taken hostage by inmates.
Police have launched a criminal probe and the Ministry of Community Safety and Corrections is conducting an internal investigation.
The Ministry says the neighbourhood around the jail wasn’t in danger during the inmate siege.
They add there’s damage to parts of the jail including cameras, cell doors and lights.
No inmates escaped during the incident.
The officer was sent to hospital and is now resting at home.
A spokesperson says this was a shocking incident and a sad reminder that, every day, correctional officers risk their safety to keep our communities safe.
