Cost To Eat Healthy Still High

The cost to eat healthy remains high in the Kenora and Rainy River district.

The Northwestern Health Unit’s latest food costing survey finds a family of four paying roughly $976 a month to properly.

Nutritionist Julie Slack says it’s a slight drop over last year, but many families are still facing significant challenges.

She notes people are still paying hydro, rent and other needed bills before feeding their family a healthy meal.

Almost 59% of Ontario families struggling to put food on the table are part of the labour force.

Slack believes that planned increases to the minimum wage and the test of a guaranteed annual income are measures that could help many eat healthier in the future.

She says it’s a step in the right direction.
