CRA Warning Of Tax Scam And Offers Tips

It’s tax time again and that means scammers are out in full force trying to take advantage of you.

Canada Revenue Agency Spokesperson Desmond Arsenault is warning that if you receive an email, phone call, letter, or text message claiming to be from them asking for personal information, you are dealing with a scam.

Arsenault says they never ask individuals to provide this personal information, they never ask someone to pay with pre-paid credit cards or gift cards and they never threaten jail time for non-payment.

He says if you receive this type of call, just hang-up, and check your CRA account to see if you are owing or in-line for a refund.

Arsenault says if you aren’t signed-up, simply call their toll-free line at 1-800-959-8281.

He adds if you think you’ve been the victim of a scam then you should contact police.
