After a lengthy hiatus, curling is back in Dryden.
Local enthusiasts have come out in droves to play the sport every Tuesday on the Chris Pronger Rink at the Memorial Arena.
Chief Building Officer Bob Cunningham says it’s exciting to have curling back in the community and is thanking the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport for supportive funding.
Cunningham says converting the ice to facilitate curling once a week doesn’t have a major impact on operations and staff time.
He says the conversion includes pebbling the ice, preparing the surface and installing portable hacks.
Arena staff start the conversion Monday night and finish early Tuesday morning and repeat the process following play that day.
Cunningham notes this is a pilot project but mentions hopes are high right now for possible growth next year.
The return of curling has also generated renewed interest at the High School, with roughly 50-students participating.
