A group of amateur cyclists is once again attempting an ambitious, three-day, 500-kilometre road trip from Winnipeg to the Experimental Lakes Area west of Vermilion Bay.
Roger Mollett is involved in “Cycling for Solutions” and he says the goal is to raise funds for the Lake Winnipeg Foundation and local water monitoring, primarily in Lake Winnipeg.
Mollett says the Foundation measures and identifies phosphorus hotspots across the watershed, noting phosphorus is the driver of harmful algae blooms.
Eight cyclists will leave Winnipeg on August 31st and the first leg will take them to Warroad, Minnesota.
Day 2 will involve a trip to Nestor Falls, with the group arriving at the ELA the next day.
Mollett says they are trying to represent the scale of the Lake Winnipeg Watershed and that’s the reason for the long route.
The watershed encompasses Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, Minnesota, North Dakota and parts of Montana.
