Deal Reached In Corrections Talks

It appears the saga to bargain a new corrections contract is coming to an end.

OPSEU announced this morning it’s come to an agreement to settle all outstanding issues in contract talks with the province, ahead of tomorrow’s strike deadline. Tom O’Neill, Chair of the Bargaining Team, says it achieves enhancements over an earlier deal rejected by the membership in November.

Local union president Mike Lundy has said key issues in reaching a deal are staff shortages, essential service designation, and pay.

A joint statement from the deputy premier and minister responsible says the deal recognizes the essential work of corrections by providing a stand-alone collective agreement for future rounds of collective bargaining, noting they will lose their right to strike going forward.

More details of the deal will be known this afternoon.
