The province has confirmed it is moving ahead with establishing a Community Justice Centre in Kenora.
Attorney General Yasir Naqvi says the goal is moving the justice system out of the traditional court room and into a community setting.
Naqvi says the facility will bring justice, health, mental health and addictions, housing and social services all together under one roof.
Naqvi says the centre will be “bi-cultural”, focusing on traditional and restorative justice practices.
He adds the facility will support Indigenous leadership.
Naqvi says the goal is to keep over-represented people out of our jail system and getting them the help they need.
Funding for the initiative was included in this year’s Ontario budget.
