$$$ Didn’t Buy Votes In Federal Election

Money didn’t buy success for local candidates in the most recent federal election.

Financial reports filed with Elections Canada show the Liberal’s Patty Hajdu won the Thunder Bay-Superior North seat despite being outspent by her opponents.

Green Party contender Bruce Hyer spent the most, burning through over $124,000, followed by the NDP’s Andrew Foulds who racked up a nearly $120,000 bill.

Conservative candidate Richard Harvey spent the least out of the major parties, with only about $59,000.

Hajdu’s election expenses totalled approximately $90,000.

In the Thunder-Bay Rainy River district, only John Rafferty’s expenses are availble. The NDP candidate spent $100,000 on his campaign.

Meanwhile, big spenders in the Kenora riding also didn’t see a return on investment.

Conservative candidate Greg Rickford didn’t retain his seat despite putting down over $163,000 on his campaign – nearly double what now Liberal MP Bob Nault spent.

The NDP’s Howard Hampton burned through nearly $150,000.

Nault’s election expenses were a modest $84,000.
