Doris K. Haugland

In loving memory of Doris K. Haugland (nee Roen) age 78 of Dryden who passed away on Wednesday August 6th, 2003 at the Dryden Regional Health Centre. Doris was born on December 28, 1924 in Nielville, Minnesota. She arrived in Canada in May of 1925 with her parents Ole and Inga Roen and her three-year-old sister Irene. The family settled at Deerloc in the District of Rainy River where they homesteaded. Doris received her elementary schooling in the Rainy River District. She started working as a domestic maid following school. Later as a cabin maid and cook at a tourist camp in Nestor Falls. Doris entered the field of nursing, and graduated as a certified nursing assistant at LaVerendrye General Hospital in Fort Frances in July of 1956. She also worked as CNS at St. Boniface Hospital in Winnipeg for 10 years. In the spring of 1964 Doris moved to Dryden and started working as a CAN at the Dryden District General Hospital, and following an interim period of employment at Dryden Medical Clinic, went back to work at D.D.G.H. and retired in December of 1989. Doris met and married Joel Haugland in Dryden and raised his two juvenile sons. Doris loved traveling. She flew twice to Anchorage, visiting her sister Irene and family. She also traveled to Alcan by car four times to visit her sister and flew three times to Norway, visiting her in-laws’ families. In her younger days Doris loved fishing, camping, and berry picking. She was an avid gardener, and loved to preserve fruit and vegetables. Doris also liked crocheting and weaving rugs. Her mother passed away in 1955 and her father in 1964. Doris is survived by her husband Joel Haugland, and two stepsons, Jostein (Rose) Haugland in Edmonton, Alberta and Jan B. Haugland in Balmertown, ON. She is also survived by cousins Howard Roen and wife Evelyn in Stratton, ON and cousin Dorthe Marr, of Stratton, ON.
Visitation for Doris Haugland was held at the Dryden Community Funeral Home on Saturday August 9, 2003 from 9:00 a.m. until time of service. Funeral Services for Doris Haugland were held on Saturday August 9, 2003 at 1:00 p.m. at the Dryden Community Funeral Home in Dryden with Rev. Mary Mennell officiating. Interment followed in the Dryden Cemetery. Family and friends gathered for a time of fellowship.
