Dryden Council has approved a 10% increase in basic water and sewer rates.
Depending on consumption your monthly bill could be going up anywhere from 8% to 18%.
Chief Administrative Officer Andre Larabie says the City hasn’t been putting money aside to pay for badly needed upgrades or a new water treatment plant.
Larabie says this hike will result in an extra $440,000 in water revenue.
Water consumption since the introduction of water meters has gone down 20% and that has left the City with a $400,000 shortfall.
Sid Wintle was the only one to vote against the hike, noting users are already being overcharged $1.8-million.
Wintle calls the increase “ridiculous”.
Others point out that money previously raised from water and sewer rates have gone to other projects and that the well is dry when it comes to water and sewer infrastructure.
