The Dryden Funeral Home is hoping to develop a Crematorium at its property on Grand Trunk Avenue.
A zoning by-law meeting was held Monday where concerns were raised about location, health and emissions.
Funeral Director Kayla Jonassen is promising to work with everyone to address those issues and find a resolution.
The idea is still in its infancy and Jonassen says the next step is having the Ministry of Environment come in to evaluate the area and speak with the public and City about emissions and health concerns.
Jonassen says the experts will be in a better position to determine potential emissions, if they are harmful and other health concerns.
In terms of the need for a Crematorium, Jonassen says cremation rates are skyrocketing in our area.
She says right now their drivers have to travel Highway 17 to Beausejour, Manitoba, putting them at risk on a daily basis.
Jonassen says she’s most concerned about the safety of her drivers but notes it has other benefits.
She says Dryden is the hub of northwestern Ontario, so it would act as a regional centre for Red Lake, Sioux Lookout, Kenora and Fort Frances.
She believes it will be a win-win for everyone.
