One of northwestern Ontario’s best known surgeons is calling it a career.
Dr. John Porter has been performing knee surgeries for 38-years and now he will be trading-in his scalpel for some golf clubs and a travel bag.
The Thunder Bay based surgeon has spent the last 12 years taking time away from home to treat and consult with patients from across the region.
Dr. Porter says he enjoyed his time in this area and will miss the staff and patients.
He says he decided to take time away from the operating room in the Lakehead because he saw the need for urgent care in this area.
Dr. Porter says the partnership shows how everyone can work together to ensure local residents receive the best care possible.
The Dryden Regional Health Centre gave him a heartfelt send off on Thursday.
He has carried out roughly 1,300 knee replacements in Dryden, as he made numerous stops along his district wide tour.
Hospital officials stress his dedication and commitment has played an integral part in delivering high quality services to our community.
