The cost of police service in communities serviced by the Ontario Provincial Police will be under the microscope again today at a meeting in Dryden.
Municipal leaders will be sitting down with provincial officials to look at a new OPP costing formula.
Northwestern Ontario Municipal Association President Dave Canfield says it’s a relief that the government is re-evaluating the issue.
Canfield says the cost of OPP policing has doubled in the past 10-years and is the highest in the country.
He notes taxpayers are left footing the bill.
Canfield says communities like Red Lake pay more than $900 a household, while others are billed less than $100.
He says all they are looking for is a more level playing field.
There is concern the cost of policing could jump even more next year, with an 8.5% increase in officer salaries set to kick in for the OPP.
