Dryden In Need Of Major Overhaul On Economic Development

The sense of urgency around the need for economic development in Dryden has evaporated.

That’s the main finding from a consultant hired to draft the Dryden Economic Development Strategic Plan.

The long term plan was presented to Council Tuesday night.

The report by Paul Blais features five key recommendations.

It calls for the hiring of an Economic Development Manager and the City to update outdated programs, materials and other tools used to promote the community.

Blais says the Dryden Development Corporation lacks the capacity to effectively provide the programs and resources needed to grow the community.

While forestry and mining still represent opportunities for Dryden, Blais is asking the City to look from within to expand its horizons.

He is calling on Council to work with local businesses and to form new partnerships.

Blais adds Dryden needs to strengthen its relationship with area First Nations, noting there’s tremendous partnership opportunities available.

Blais says the ultimate goal is improving the quality of life for residents and visitors and the City must target economic opportunities.

He says the focus should be on downtown development, seniors services and housing, industrial and commercial development, sports tourism, taking advantage of the airport as well as the growth of the Cloverbelt Local Food Co-op.

The report also targets youth out-migration and skills development opportunities.

The DDC will review and likely approve the report Thursday.
