Dryden Looking At Taxi Licence Changes

The City of Dryden is launching a review on how it hands out taxi licences.

Clerk Debra Kincaid says staff will be a looking at a mechanism to deregulate the number of licences.

Staff currently issue tags on a ratio basis.

Kincaid says right now 9-vehicle licences are spoken for and two are still available.

Kincaid says the City has received several requests for additional licences from both local cab owners as well as from another member of the public.

Dryden has also been approached by Uride, operating from Thunder Bay, indicating their intention to expand and operate in this area.

Kincaid says allowing ride share services in the community won’t be part of this review.

However, she warns it will have to be considered down the road as all trends indicate a gain in popularity for Uber, ride share and/or fare for shuttle services.

Kincaid says the City has to take a close look at taxi services, keeping in mind there must be an even playing feel, and ensuring that all vehicles and drivers meet safety and legal standards.
