For the health and safety of our veterans and community, Dryden’s Remembrance Day Services will be held virtually in light of COVID-19.
Co-Poppy Chair for the Legion Nola Hill explains this means the cancellation of the annual luncheon and banquet, which usually follows services at the cenotaph.
However, Hill says you’ll still be able to wear a poppy in support of our veterans and you’ll have plenty of opportunities to purchase one.
“Poppies will be put in all the stores that allow us to on October 30th. We won’t have the cadets this year, so they won’t have the poppy blitz. My other co-chair Karen Hewitson and I will be set up at the Golden Mile Plaza from 10am-4pm and then Walmart from 5pm-9pm from November 2nd to the 10th.”
Hill talks about their campaign for this year, that’s very timely.
“Our campaign this year surrounds service animals for Citadel Therapy Canine Society. So, we’ve brought in pins with dogs, horses, donkeys and the pigeon on them. We will be laying a wreath that has purple poppies on it, in memory of the service animals. Because of COVID-19 we’ve had quite an increase of PTSD in our military and also first responders, By giving partial funding to Citadel, it’s nonprofit organization were hoping to help financially to get more animals out into the public to help with PTSD that’s created through wars and now COVID-19.”
Hill notes service animals have helped not only our military, but also the general public and they want to recognize that.
As for services, the cenotaph will be closed off to the public and two Legion members will be laying the wreaths, on behalf of those who purchase one.
Shaw Cable will be streaming services on November 11 and you can watch it live on Channel 10.
