Fixed water rates or water meters.
Dryden City Council grappled with that issue last night as the city passed bylaws to hike water and sewer rates.
The increases are part of the 2002 city budget.
Water rates will jump to 24 dollars per month for most residential customers while sewer rates balloon to just over 20 dollars per month.
However, city council seems split on the idea to switch from fixed water rates to water meters.
Dryden City Councillor Joe Delaney, a downtown restaurant owner, wants the city to adopt water meters.
Councillor Velma Silver is also in favour of the idea saying residents should pay for the actual amount of water they consume.
Dryden City Engineer Brad Johns is awaiting federal funding to proceed with a water usage study which would include the idea of water meters.
