Today is Moose Hide campaign day.
It’s a day for all Canadians to take a stand against violence towards women and children.
The Dryden Working Circle committee is trying to raise the profile of the Moose hide campaign.
Councillor Catherine Kiewning is co-chair and says the campaign in BC and has spread across Canada.
“It is grounded in Indigenous healing and ceremony and essentially a symbol of this campaign is the little moose hide pin,” Kiewning told Dryden city council this week during a presentation.
“The pin signifies your commitment to honour, respect and protect the women and children in your life.”
Ted Mitchell is the other co-chair of the Dryden Working Circle committee and says the Moose Hide campaign its working to bring awareness about violence against women.
“Every year there are over 60,000 physical or sexual assaults against women. One in three women will be sexually assaulted in their lifetime. In 2014, there was a daily average of 7,969 women and children staying in shelters across Canada, because it was not safe to be at home.”
The City of Dryden is also supporting the Moose Hide campaign with a proclamation endorsing it.
